LEARN HOW PLANTS CAN DYE FABRIC TO MAKE ARTWORK!
Available spots
Service Description
This exciting project will introduce you to a host of skills that will surprise and delight your creativity (arts and crafts), history and science interests! The Quarry Chapel is collaborating with Wild Acres and GL11's Cam Oral History project who have interviewed retired ladies who worked at Cam Mills. These recordings will allow us to extract bits of stories to create artwork that responds to these fascinating memories and introduce us to some amazing creative ways of working. Cam Mills has and continues to make specialised felt products that are used to create the King's Guards red uniforms, international competition standard bias (the green felt on snooker tables) and Wimbledon's tennis balls! We will create artwork in response to the ladies stories learning how to felt pictures, make yarn, weave and print. Alongside this we will dye our own wool and thread using plants over a fire outside in the chapel garden, learning the difference between these natural dyes and commercial ones now used widely that will create beautiful coloured textiles! Abi Nicol will be leading the experimental artwork and Martin will be wowing you with the dyes, even planting a few seedlings in our garden so that we can harvest the plants later in the year to dye more wool and fabrics! By the end of the five weeks you will be able to make and dye your own yarn/ fabrics using both natural and commercial dyes, including which plants can be grown to do this. You'll be able to create a felted picture, weave and print your drawings and text onto fabric. The course will be supportive and calm. The small group, maximum 10 will allow you to feel safe giving us all time to experiment and have fun learning lots of new skills! The course has been designed to support young people who are living with anxiety and currently not/part attending school. Young people are welcome to come by themselves or with a trusted adult. It will be led by Martin Conyers from Wild Acres Community Project and Abi Nicol from The Quarry Chapel. The course is open to anyone between the ages of 8 and 18. We are happy to meet beforehand to talk about any questions/concerns you may have. WHEN: 11-1pm - Tuesdays 17th June, 24th June, 1st July, 8th July 15th July
